State
4th Place
Section 3AA
Champion
Classic
Suburban Champion
Schwan Cup Silver Division Champion
- The Pioneers
won their first 16 games, finished the regular season 23-1-1, and were
ranked #2 statewide for most of the year. They played #1 Holy
Angels to a tie before a packed house at Aldrich Arena on January 21.
The loss was to eventual Class A champion St. Thomas Academy.
- Hill-Murray
took the top seed in Section 3 for the first time since 1999 and won it
for the first time since 2002, but needed double overtime to do it.
Bryant Skarda tipped Derek McCallum's long shot into the
upper
corner to put Hill-Murray in its 20th MSHSL state tournament.
- Junior Nick
Larson scored a hat trick in the state quarterfinal against Minnetonka,
had five goals overall in the tournament, and was named to the
All-tournament team.
- The team's
top four defensemen - Bill Leier, Derek McCallum, Gabe Guentzel, and
Mac Garceau - had already earned nine varsity letters among them prior
to this season.
- The December
6 game against White Bear Lake was the first statewide telecast of a
high school hockey game by Fox Sports Net. Play-by-play was
done
by Anthony LaPanta, who had honed his skills broadcasting many
Hill-Murray games on local cable television in the '90s.
Color
commentator Kevin Gorg was the goalie for the Burnsville team that
defeated Hill-Murray 4-3 in the 1985 state championship game.
- The 6-3 win over Moorhead was the first by a
Minnesota team at Moorhead in over four years.
- Junior Mike Hoeffel amassed 114 points in two
seasons and committed to the University of Minnesota.
- Sniper and shorthanded specialist Brian Arrigoni
finished his three year career with 65 goals and 111 points.
- Defenseman
and captain Derek McCallum finished a four year career with 93 points
and went to the University of Minnesota on a baseball scholarship.
