Game Recap

Duluth East completed a three goal comeback with six seconds left in regulation to earn a tie with Hill-Murray in the Schwan Cup quarterfinal.  Nick Larson then scored the only goal of the three round shootout tiebreaker to send Hill-Murray to the tournament semifinal.  Joe Phillippi saved all three East attempts in the shootout.

The Pioneers scored about as quickly as possible off the opening faceoff, where it went Furne to Larson to Zepeda, who one-timed a shot over East goalie Ben Leis' left shoulder just eight seconds into the game.

Jeff Westerhaus was penalized five minutes for checking from behind, but Hill-Murray outscored East on the ensuing power play.  Larson took a clearing pass from Dan Sova, fended off a defenseman and put a backhand over Leis for a 2-0 lead.

Dan Cecka had another shorthanded breakway later in the period, but Leis made a nice glove save.

The Pioneer starting line duplicated their quick start in the second period.  This time it took 12 seconds before Ryan Furne shoved in the puck which was left in the crease after Larson's breakaway.

At that point, Hill-Murray had a comfortable lead but East chipped away, with Joe Nelson scoring from the slot at 8:46 and Rob Johnson on a 2-on-1 late in the second period.

East's rally appeared that it would come up short, but Keegan Flaherty's shot from the left wing boards deflected off a defenseman's stick and past Phillippi six seconds before the third period buzzer.

East outshot the Pioneers 6-4 in the overtime, with Phillippi stopping several shots with commotion in front of him and Tony Danna breaking up a 2-on-1 late in the game.
