Game Recap

Christian Horn and Pat Steinhauser teamed up for three goals as Benilde-St. Margaret's edged Hill-Murray with a late comeback. Horn, a freshman forward, scored two nearly carbon copy goals directly after offensive zone faceoffs, one at 6:53 of the third period and the other at 6:51 of overtime. That spoiled an otherwise sterling performance by Pioneer netminder Tim Shaughnessy, who had 34 saves and managed to protect a narrow lead until Benilde scored the tying goal with 2:46 to play.

Hill-Murray threw 29 shots on goal in the first two periods, but the first 27 were stopped by Rob Ankeny, who also had a strong game and finished with 37 saves. The Pioneers scored their two goals in the final minute of the second period, the first off the stick of Jack Walsh, who put in a rebound after Ryan Holler sped around a defenseman and drove to the net. Then with time running out, Tyler Zepeda was hooked on a breakaway and Ben Bahe pounced on the loose puck and scored on a forehand move.

Shaughnessy stopped two breakaways in the second period, one the result of a clearing attempt that was caught by the skate of Brett Patterson just as he stepped out of the penalty box. A Hill-Murray penalty in the offensive zone with four minutes to go proved costly as Steinhauser wound up tying the game on a backhand from the edge of the crease after a shot from the right point.

Both teams had an abbreviated power play in overtime and had several excellent chances to win, and Jeff Westerhaus' shot hit the inside of the goalpost moments before Horn's game winner.
