Hill-Murray defeated familiar first-game foe Burnsville 2-1 to start the 2019 hockey season. A pair of rookies scored goals in the Pioneers' first season opening overtime game in 19 years.
Most of the game was as defensive minded as the score indicated, with few open scoring chances by either team. Burnsville was the beneficiary of three consecutive power plays in the second period, and scored midway through the second power play. Jace Trachsel one-timed a backdoor pass that second year netminder Remington Keopple had little chance of stopping. However, Keopple made a big save later in the period on a 2-on-0 break.
During Burnsville's third power play, Henry Eischen led a shorthanded rush, and Joey Anderson was sent to the penalty box for five minutes for tripping him. But Hill-Murray was unable to score in over four minutes of power play time that carried into the third period.
The third period was Hill-Murray's best of the game, as Burnsville tired under increasing forechecking pressure from the Pioneers. Hill-Murray drew even as Sam Karr muscled the puck to the top of the crease where it was poked in by Nick Mountain.
Three minutes into overtime, Joe Quast made a bid to win when his open shot from the left wing circle hit the inside of the far post and rebounded right underneath the goalie. Sensing trouble, Burnsville called time-out, but soon after play resumed, Triston Tabucol got the puck in almost the same spot as Quast. Tabucol's low shot found the net, giving Hill-Murray its first victory of the season.
