2015-2016 Hill-Murray Hockey

Section 4AA 2nd Place
Metro East Champion
  • After just nine 1-0 games in the program's first 55 years, Hill-Murray played four 1-0 games this season, including two against St. Thomas Academy, and the section final which went into overtime scoreless.
  • Led by future NHLers Jackson and Noah Cates, Stillwater went 23-1-1 in the regular season and was a state title contender for the first time. They beat Hill-Murray 1-0 in the third consecutive section final between the schools.
  • Hill-Murray won the Metro East by one game over St. Thomas Academy, who split with Hill-Murray but lost to and tied Mahtomedi.
  • Luke Ranallo scored a very rare 3 on 5 shorthanded goal against Blaine.
  • For the second year in a row, a AA team did not lose in the regular season. Benilde-St. Margaret's won 24 games, tied defending state champion Lakeville North, but lost their section semifinal to unheralded Cretin-Derham Hall.
  • Wayzata won that school's first state championship. Hill-Murray split with Wayzata in two December games, including a 7-1 win, which was the second time in three years that Hill-Murray put the eventual state champion on running time but failed to make the tournament. Following a section realignment, Wayzata ended Edina's nine year section title run in the Section 6AA semifinal, then defeated giant killer CDH, followed by Burnsville, Stillwater, and Eden Prairie, becoming the first team since the 1991 Pioneers to win a large school state championship game after trailing by two goals.
