Game Recap

It has come to be expected that when Hill-Murray and White Bear Lake face off in the playoffs, a classic is about to ensue, and this game didn't disappoint. Down 3-0 after one period, Hill-Murray decided their season wasn't about to end yet, and two plus periods of total team effort produced the most exciting result Pioneer fans have witnessed in recent years.

HM got back in the game while both teams were down a man in the second period. Sam Kelly skated into the slot from the corner and deposited a shot over senior goalie Dan Carlson's glove. HM dominated most of the second period, but was still down 3-1 until Kelly took a long shot through a screen that went in for his second goal.

HM continued to apply the pressure early in the third and tied the game when B.J. Thompson banged in a rebound. Then Peter Croonquist and Brian Arrigoni set up Jay Cascalenda streaking down the slot. Cascalenda shot the puck through Carlson's legs to give HM their first lead five minutes into the third. It was short lived, however, as WBL's David Grun poked in a rebound for the game tying goal.

The best chance early in overtime went to WBL as Matt Greer had a partial breakaway, but James Fangel managed to get a glove on the shot while lying on his side. The winning goal came courtesy of Joey McEnaney, who batted a rebound of Derek McCallum's point shot over Carlson to send the Pioneers into the next round. WBL finishes their season at 22-5.

WBL's leading scorer, Dan Bonne, sat out the game due to injury. His replacement on the first line, sophomore David Grun, scored two goals.

It won't show on the stat sheet, but Tim Dickhudt's shorthanded play helped turn the game around in the second period. Dickhudt twice drew penalties while HM was shorthanded, the second after fending off three WBL defenders for ten seconds behind their net.
