Game Recap

Hill-Murray defeated Mahtomedi 5-4, a win that guaranteed them sole possession of the Classic Suburban championship. An unassisted goal by Isaac Kohls at 1:15 of the third period stood up as the game winner. Mahtomedi had come back from a two goal deficit once already, and had a chance to pull the trick a second time when they went on the power play with just over two minutes remaining, but Hill-Murray did not allow a shot on goal to preserve the win.

The Pioneers methodically controlled the first period and earned themselves a two goal lead. Andy Singerhouse put in a rebound from a shallow angle at 1:22, and Nick Widing buried Ryan Furne's goalmouth pass at 8:42.

Mahtomedi played an up-tempo second period and got back in the game with a shorthanded goal. Joe Phillippi stopped a breakaway, but Charlie Adams poked the puck through his pads for a goal. The Zephyrs tied the game on James Buttermore's power play goal, then took the lead one second after another power play expired when Colin Trissler tipped a shot that barely trickled across the goal line.

Phillippi came up with a big save at a key moment, snaring a breakaway attempt with his glove as Ben Holker made a bid to put Mahtomedi up 4-2.

Just as quickly as they had given up the lead, Hill-Murray got it right back. Dan Cecka tipped in Kohls' centering pass from the top of the crease, then set up Ryan Furne for a 50-foot slap shot less than a minute later.

Kohls made it 5-3 early in the third, stealing the puck in the neutral zone and beating Smith from the right side. Brian Houdek countered quickly for the Zephyrs with a rebound goal just under the crossbar.

Hill-Murray continued to pressure throughout the third period. Smith repulsed them with two great saves off 2-on-1s, leaving the final outcome in doubt until the end.
