Game Recap

Lou Metcalf's breakaway goal with 50 seconds remaining lifted Hill-Murray to a 4-3 win over Moorhead. The first goal by the Pioneer third line in four games couldn't have come at a better time and it gave Hill-Murray its third consecutive one-goal victory to close out the regular season.

The Pioneers scored both early and late in this game, taking the lead on Ryan Furne's goal 34 seconds in. Dan Cecka set up the goal by intercepting a clearing pass and quickly finding Furne at the top of the crease. Moorhead countered with a breakaway goal by Joe Becker and twice tied the game in the first period.

Becker and Nick Thielen combined on two of the Spuds' three goals and put Moorhead up 3-2 early in the second period. Becker one-timed Thielen's centering pass on a 2-on-1 that had been created when another forward interfered with Hill-Murray defenseman Bo Dolan at the blue line. Moorhead's other goal came with 9 seconds remaining on their first power play, as Braden Rahman snapped a low shot from 10 feet. But Hill-Murray killed off five other man advantages, including nearly a minute of 5-on-3 at the start of the third period.

Dan Sova gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead, one-timing Cecka's pass from behind the net in the high slot. Sova's shot went off goalie Logan Marks' glove and landed just across the goal line. Hill-Murray peppered the Moorhead net extensively during two power plays in the second period, tying the game at 3 when Jeff Westerhaus slid in a rebound of Dolan's long shot.

After six combined goals in the first 20 minutes, neither team could score until Metcalf broke the deadlock in the final minute. Paul Prescott blocked a point shot and Metcalf broke down the ice, caught Prescott's pass and roofed a shot over Logan's glove, putting the Pioneers ahead for good.
