Game Recap

Sporting their all black uniforms in a game that left more than a few black and blue marks on both sides, Hill-Murray made a clean sweep of the evening's two contests with the varsity and JV winning by identical 5-2 scores.

White Bear Lake played a spirited first ten minutes and took a 1-0 lead, only to see the next five goals all end up in their own net. The short-lived lead came 22 seconds into the Bears' first power play off the stick Brandon Wahlin, after several players had whacks at a loose rebound in the goal crease.

Thereafter began a stretch of some 30 minutes of game time during which Hill-Murray goalie Tim Shaughnessy had little to do while the Pioneers methodically scored five straight goals. Willie Faust got the equalizer at 14:30 of the first period, gaining the offensive blue line and wristing a shot past a defenseman that eluded Owen Colette's blocker and went in just inside the post.

Hill-Murray scored all three goals of the second period, helped by seven minutes of power play time. An even strength goal at 5:17 made it 2-1; Jack Walsh's turnaround shot from the slot was kicked out to Paul Prescott just off the right post for a rebound goal.

At 6:55, Nick Lennartson of the Bears received a major penalty for checking from behind, and the Hill-Murray power play, slow to get going in this game, scored twice on the extended advantage despite losing two minutes to a minor penalty. Walsh scored on a rebound of a long shot, and Isaac Kohls scored a highlight reel goal, stickhandling past two defenseman and freezing the goalie before his backhand found an open net.

Kohls scored another power play goal when he was left alone in front for a nice feed out of the left corner by Nick Widing. His bid for a third goal was thwarted by a hook while he was on a breakaway. White Bear finished the scoring as a deflection off a skate left Shaughnessy out of position for Wahlin's second goal.
