2009-2010 Hill-Murray Hockey

State 3rd Place
Section 4AA Champion
Classic Suburban Champion
  • The 2010 Pioneers were one of the deepest and most balanced teams in school history, with strong defense and goaltending and three, even four, forward lines capable of scoring regularly. Junior netminder Tim Shaughnessy had plenty of help in front of him, with Chris Casto, Jordan Johnson, J.D. Cotroneo, and Kevin Schulze leading one of the state's most effective though unheralded defensive corps.
  • Hill-Murray was outshot just twice all season, including a state quarterfinal win against Duluth East, in which the Pioneers scored twice in the last minute of the first period and twice more in the first minute of the second period.
  • For the fourth time in five years, Hill-Murray and St. Thomas Academy split their two head-to-head contests, but a Mahtomedi victory over STA left the conference title solely to HM. Mahtomedi also defeated STA in the section final as they had the year before.
  • The Pioneers finally defeated Holy Angels after going a combined 0-7-1 against them from 2002-2009.
  • In one of the best played losses ever by Hill-Murray team, the Pioneers wound up losing the state semifinal in the fourth overtime to consensus #1 Minnetonka, after holding the Skippers to nine shots in the first three periods.
  • The state championship was contested between Edina and Minnetonka, two teams which hailed from the same conference but neither of whom was its champion. That honor went to Wayzata, which tied Minnetonka twice but failed to reach the section final. Edina lost to Minnetonka 7-1 in December but was the only team to beat the Skippers in the regular season and won the championship 4-2.
