Game Recap

Hill-Murray got the 2007-08 season underway with a 5-0 non-conference win. Leading the way on the stat sheet were senior captains Ryan Furne, who scored a hat trick, and Joe Phillippi, the winning goaltender with a perfect 16 saves on 16 shots.

The Pioneers' first foray into the Wayzata zone resulted in a goal at 1:02 of the first period. On a 2-on-1, Dan Cecka drew the lone defender and centered for defenseman Jordan Johnson, who slid in a backhand.

Johnson was also involved in Hill-Murray's second goal, taking a centering pass from Nick Widing and shooting from close range. His shot was deflected right to Andy Singerhouse who slammed it in from just off the right post.

Hill-Murray generated odd-man rushes with regularity for the rest of the game. Wayzata goalie Ty Simcoe stopped most of them, and when Dan Cecka finally got a backhand past him, the puck struck high off the goalpost. Wayzata's best chance came when Matt Straate was awarded a penalty shot late in the first period, but his shot went wide.

Furne scored the last three goals of the game, the first coming when Bo Dolan's clearing pass gave Furne a clean breakaway as he was coming out of the penalty box. Furne also scored on a 2-on-1 and a rebound on a power play in the third period.

Phillippi had to earn the shutout with several saves on a two-man advantage for Wayzata in the final minute. Hill-Murray finished with a 31-16 edge in shots overall.
